Dow 30 Breadth
Reading
It shows how broadly the Dow is advancing — how many of the 30 stocks are technically strong, not just the index level. High means the strength is broad and healthy; low means only a few names are carrying the index, so the move is narrow and more fragile.
It shows the 30 members of the DJIA — the Dow Jones Industrial Average (index ticker ^DJI, often just “the Dow”). First published on 26 May 1896 by Charles Dow and statistician Edward Jones, it began as an average of just 12 large industrial companies, grew to 20 in 1916 and to its current 30 in 1928. Unlike most modern indexes, the Dow is price-weighted — higher-priced shares carry more influence than the size of the company — with a “Dow Divisor” adjusting for splits. More on index weighting →
